The 360degree appraisal has been likened to a jury. Colleagues are asked to comment on a series of statements, normally using a rating scale to assess aspects of the individual’s performance, for example, with respect to team-working or time-keeping. This could be answering a complex enquiry, completion of a project, consistency in output or mastering a new skill. Encourage the appraisee to reflect on: real circumstances and actual behaviour; perception of self; perception by others; effect that the appraisee has on others; blind spots (perceived or actual). Feedback on performance can be described with the mnemonics of LIFE and DEATH.
