Over 30 complete sets of laboratory experiments have been put together in recent years, of which nearly 50% are made of servomechanisms. SERVOMECHANISM. The servomechanism is the basic system found in our laboratory. We have built 18 replicated units so that 36 students can work simultaneously in groups of two. This allows a considerable reduction in the number of assistants needed in the laboratory. The hardware and software choices are important. We opted for PCs because of their low cost and relative ease of use.

The different projects offered to students will now be presented so that the reader may become acquainted with the different topics and the order in which they are presented. Two of these projects will be examined in the following section. As was mentioned in section 2, emphasis is put on programmable controllers and Grafcet synthesis on this equipment. These second year projects also illustrate the possibilities offered by Grafcet as a modelling and production systems control tool. There are 3 projects of this sort.

These features will allow a closer examination of system behavior. Depending on the topics, RTSA can expand students exposure to real-world engineering applications beyond the usually limited aparata and resources for the laboratory at an institution. RTSA can also be set up on many PC's, eliminating scheduling and maintenance problems. It is noted that the notion of RTSA materialized as a result of the authors' previous effort to effectively demonstrate the important benefits of the research cited in Appendix A to engineering project managers and engineers.
