By William Bryant Logan
The writer of Dirt and Oak brings to existence this fastest, so much maintaining, such a lot communicative portion of the earth.
Air sustains the residing. each creature breathes to stay, changing and altering the ambience. Water and mud spin and upward thrust, make clouds and fall back, fertilizing the dust. Twenty thousand fungal spores and part 1000000 micro organism go back and forth in a sq. foot of summer season air. The chemical feel of aphids, the ultraviolet sight of swifts, a newborn’s information of its mother’s breast―all ensue within the medium of air.
lack of awareness of the air is dear. The artist Eva Hesse died of breathing in her fiberglass medium. millions have been sickened after 9-11 by way of supposedly “safe” air. The African Sahel suffers drought partly simply because we fill the air with commercial dusts. With the passionate narrative variety and wide-ranging erudition that experience made William Bryant Logan’s paintings a touchstone for nature enthusiasts and environmentalists, Air is―like the contents of a bag of seaborne dirt that Darwin accrued aboard the Beagle―a treasure trove of discovery. 25 illustrations

The apple tree marked one boundary; the edge where the lawn gave way to woods another. They went no higher than the highest sumac staghorns, above which a bird might have snagged them. They brushed the grass at the bottom. Sometimes they seemed to be chasing one another. Often, they seemed to be chasing the air itself. They did not fly in elegant arabesques so much as in twisting angles.
The rain was not falling anymore. It was blowing sideways down the street as though it were in an awful hurry to get to Queens. The Levakises’ Lexis turned left on the on-ramp and drove onto the Grand Central Parkway. At Upton, Smith was scrolling fast through the radar screens: Upton, LaGuardia, JFK. The tornado pushed on into southern Queens. The rain slacked on State Street. I went out with Orion and turned left to follow our usual route. “Oh shit,” I breathed. Between 3rd Avenue and Nevins, the whole of State Street was littered with tree parts: London plane, Norway maple, linden, honey locust.
And many thanks to my daughter, Eliza Logan, who on short notice managed to track down and get permission for all the photographs in Air. I have certainly neglected to mention at least a few people, and I will be kicking myself about it. I ask them to forgive my addled pate. For the use I have made of what others were generous enough to tell me, I alone am responsible. And in this bright confusion we are bound Like anything to everything around. m. on September 16, 2010, Brandon Smith left home, bound for his shift at the Upton office of the National Weather Service.
